Special Education ProvidersSchool for special need students

High Road Academy of Washington DC (HRA) is a specialized school for students with learning disabilities.  Our school offers small group setting, one on one instruction, behavioral supports and individualized education program for each student.  Our classrooms range from ten to twelve students and are lead by a certified teacher and a teaching assistant. On staff we have a reading specialist that works closely with the Reading and English teachers to monitor progress of each student.  Our teachers use programs such as Corrective Reading and Read Naturally along with the curriculum to enhance our students’ academic progress.

Within the classroom or through pullout, our students have a range of related services that include speech/language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, individual and group therapy provided by a licensed social worker.  All related service providers work on goals that are specific to the students to needs.

HRA offers two tracks for our students: Diploma track and a Certificate track.  The Diploma track students have 24.0 Carnegie units to complete in order to receive a high school diploma.  HRA has a fantastic staff certified to teach in all content areas in order for students to reach their fullest academic potential. Our students work closely with their transition specialist to focus on their plans after high school. The Certificate track program has access to our wonderful DC-PACT program that offers many job prep courses.  Students take Math, Reading, Job Prep & Life Skills courses to work on all of their individualized education plan goals.  They also have access to specific job prep courses such as: Culinary Arts, Graphic Design, Networking, Video Production, Automotive, Carpentry, Barbering, Cosmetology and Childcare.  You will find more information about this great program under Transition on this web page. The diploma and certificate curriculum is accompanied by supplemental materials such as guest speakers, special events, field trips, and on site job experience.

High Road Academy – News - 1/13/2012

Tre’ Wise, a senior who attends High Road Academy in Washington, DC, has recently been accepted into the Youth 202 Internship Program at Martin Luther King Library. The program is the voice of DC's teens--created for youth, by youth. Teens learn radio production skills from the Radio Rootz crew, interview people in the community, and help keep other teens “in the know” about news, issues, events, programs, and anything else they think is important. The program offers youth community service and a stipend. Tre’ has also been accepted to Mercy College in New York and wants to major in Recording Arts Technology.
Congratulations Tre’ Wise and keep up the great work.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

High Road Academy welcomes you back from the summer and we hoped you had a wonderful summer and are ready for another exciting school year. This year High Road Academy has adopted the District of Columbia’s Public School Dress Code/Uniform Policy. The rulemaking was enacted on March 5, 2009 by the City Council approval and Mayor’s order. We are excited to require the dress code policy and maintain compliance with the local school district. The Student Government Associations at our schools have also strongly supported this transition.

We have enclosed student shirt order forms, which require your completion, payment and submission to us as soon as possible. All students are required to wear the High Road shirt either short sleeve or long sleeved and khaki bottoms to school on a daily basis.

Parents, Guardians thank you for the continued support and we look forward to another great school year!
