Academic Programs

Planning for each student’s educational program begins with a thorough assessment of his or her academic strengths and areas for improvement. As disabilities manifest themselves in a variety of patterns, we customize a program for each child. Our teachers take the time to find the right instructional approach for each student.

Small Classroom Size
Each classroom is limited to 8 - 10 students who are educated by a highly qualified special education teacher and one to two teaching assistants. The small student-to-staff ratio enables our staff to teach in the style most appropriate for each student, while allowing each student to progress at his or her own pace. Each student is also assigned an individual work space to maximize their comfort level and minimize distractions while working independently.

Establishing Core Academic Skills
Throughout the morning, the teaching staff works with each student to provide direct instruction in the core academic areas: reading, writing, mathematics, and language arts. Using a Virginia Standards of Learning–based curriculum, students participate in a 20-minute rotation schedule that keeps them focused and actively engaged with the learning material. An essential tool to help each student continue the process of lifelong learning is reading. Our teachers therefore employ a variety of reading, spelling, and writing methodologies to help the student establish this most basic foundation.

In mathematics, the students learn computation skills, followed by problem-solving applications. The staff guides the students along this skills-application sequence gradually, introducing them to more demanding material at properly paced intervals. At every age, we emphasize those math applications particularly important for the child with special needs, such as time and money management. We also provide content-area instruction in science, social studies, physical education, health, art, technology education, and a variety of elective classes.

Technology in the Classroom
High Road Schools invest in state-of-the-art technology for every classroom. We believe that familiarity with computers and technology is essential preparation for every student’s future. The programs we use — most notably, Odyssey/Compass Learning — offers a wide variety of subject matter, problem types, and presentation formats to keep the student interested and motivated. Since the computer curriculum applies at all grade levels, we base each student’s program on his or her competencies in each subject area.

Computers also assist our teachers in monitoring student progress. Our programs allow the teacher to focus on skills that are currently being taught, as well as those that are in need of review.  It should be noted that at each High Road School, we use computers to support direct instruction in the classroom; computers are never used as a substitute for our singular brand of highly individualized, one-on-one tutorial-based instruction.

School Information

At High Road School, we specialize in educating students with emotional/behavioral difficulties and addressing their related learning problems. Our overriding mission is to foster student success in both classroom and community through academic achievement and increased self-esteem.

At High Road School, we get to know every student, building an individual educational program through a well defined teaching style that meets each student’s unique needs.  We then help the student master achievable skills before introducing more challenging materials. Classroom success and achievement lead to improved and enhanced confidence and competence. In this way, we create a positive cycle of learning, success, and self-worth.

In response to parents’ and districts’ priorities and mandates, High Roads offers a full, rich, and rigorous academic curriculum with adherence to each student’s IEP goals and objectives.  The IEP is further supported by individual and group therapy, which assists the students in generalizing what they’ve learned via the High Roads program to their everyday life. We are proud of the successful outcomes our students have experienced in both mainstreaming and shared-time transitional programs.

High Road School also has a comprehensive transition program through our on-campus School-to-Work program. Through this service, we give students the option for work experience, both on and off campus.  This experience facilitates their move from the school setting to the work force.

Transition

The various and diverse transitional services of High Road Schools allow students to apply the skills they’ve acquired in the classroom — academic, social, behavioral, and otherwise — to “real-world” contexts in order to gain an understanding of the economic forces in society and of the professional culture in general. All of the programming that is designed to transition the student from school to work emphasizes preparation for productive employment after graduation. To make this employment as successful and fulfilling as possible, we help the student explore his or her interests and then build upon natural talents in choosing possible career paths. As students mature, we encourage them to gradually become more self-reliant. Our Transitional Services staff aids in this process by giving the students just the right amount of independence and interaction with the wider community, while still providing the supports necessary for the students to feel secure and confident.

Social Skills Training and Career Exploration Program
The vision of High Road School’s Social Skills Training and Career Exploration Program is to further the knowledge and growth of participating students through multiple avenues of learning. These avenues include: social skills training, independent living skills, vocational experience, community service, and career exploration and planning. Students utilize a rigorous set of social skills curriculum which focuses on building and sustaining both personal and professional relationships, healthy living, self-care concepts, and personal organization, and career exploration. Through hand-on activities and the use of technology, students practice these skills and learn to apply them to their daily living.  Career exploration curriculum supports the students in their endeavors to research various careers of interest and the creation of a resume.

School-to-Work Program
Our School-to-Work Program offers students the opportunity to participate in true-to-life jobs within
the school setting. The end goal of the program is to allow students to practice the employment skills and social skills they’ve learned in class in order to maximize their potential for success in the real world. As such, students seek to obtain jobs by first filling out an application and interviewing for the position they are interested in, as they would in real life. Once the student obtains a suitable position at the school, they are held accountable for their attendance and performance, so we work with them on such aspects of employment as punctuality, responsibility, and working independently. Many of the jobs the students procure involve our student-run, on-the-premises retail business. Students participating in the School-to-Work Program are trained to operate many state-of-the-art machines that make customized products for sale through this retail business.

Community-Based Instruction
High Road Schools afford students the opportunity to take their learning out of the classroom and transfer it into the community. We work with our students to practice the proficiencies they have mastered in the School-to-Work Program, and then, when a student is ready, staff members accompany them to volunteer sites out in the general public. High Road Schools work with several community volunteer organizations, guiding students toward directly contributing to their community and, as a result, becoming active members of society. In addition, High Road Schools promote student interaction with the general public by visiting local businesses and educational institutions. Community-Based Instruction not only enhances social and self-awareness, but it empowers High Road students to act upon that awareness and produce positive results.
